Some high school and college athletes have a sophomore slump. Bayfield High School sophomore Abigail Robertson had a sophomore surge.
Robertson was voted the top Wolverine fall athlete on durangoherald.com after leading Bayfield girls cross country in all six meets she attended. Robertson won the poll with 36% of the vote. Boys soccer player Ayden Casillas was second with 30% of the vote and volleyball’s Tana Owens was third with 15%.
“It means a lot to me,” Robertson said about winning the vote. “It was really cool that I got that opportunity to even be on the roster of the voting.”
Robertson had three top-10 finishes this season; she was fourth at the Bayfield Cross XC Invitational, ninth at the Boggy Draw Bear Chase with a 23 minutes and 44.23 seconds finish and sixth at the McGinn Memorial Cross Country Challenge in 23:58.58. Her best time of the season was 21:36.93 at the Joe I. Vigil Cross Country Invitational.
“It was a really great season,” Robertson said. “I love my coaches, my teammates and I love running. I was getting stronger and quicker this season, so I was super stoked about that.”
She also thanked God for giving her the ability to run and have a good season.
Robertson is currently training for track and field season in the spring, where she plans on running the mile, 800 meters and the 400. She said she likes cross country better because there’s less waiting around.
Only a sophomore, Robertson has aspirations of running in college. She wants to be a nurse.
When she’s not running, Robertson likes to paint and to play her cello in the San Juan Youth Orchestra.
Robertson cites her parents, Cody and Grace Robertson, as role models. Her parents ran at New Mexico State University and introduced her to the sport.
