Bayfield surely missed sophomore star Vivien Clance in Friday’s 3A/4A Intermountain League opener against Alamosa. Sidelined due to concussion protocol after a collision during Jan. 11’s win over Telluride, all Clance could do was watch as her team lost 55-17.
The Wolverines fell to 4-5 and 0-1 in league play, while Alamosa broke a two-game losing streak to improve to 7-3 and 1-0 in the IML.
Bayfield was also missing freshman guard Kieley White Thunder, making Alamosa’s task of keying defensively on standout Renae Foutz easier. Even though Foutz hit six of eight free throws and totaled a game-high 13 points, the Mean Moose exploded to an early lead and led 20-2 after the first quarter.
Paced by sophomore Audrina Knorr’s team-best 11 points, which all came during the first half, AHS more or less kept up the pace through the second quarter and went into halftime up 31-3. Alamosa head coach Ty Crowther leaned heavily on his bench and the fourth quarter commenced with the visitors leading 42-8. Alamosa cruised through the fourth quarter, adding four points to their eventual 38-point margin of victory.
Sophomore Kimball Anderson scored the other four points for Bayfield, while freshmen Kamryn Moeller and Leela Guitierrez each scored eight for the Mean Moose. Eleven of Alamosa’s 12 suited-up players scored at least two points.
The Mean Moose hosted Montezuma-Cortez (3-6, 0-1 IML) on Saturday, while the Wolverines also traveled into the San Luis Valley to face Centauri (9-2, 1-0). Results of both contests were unavailable at press time.
