After a fatal wreck occurred at Bayfield's only traffic light, residents say it's time for the Colorado Department of Transportation to remove the flashing yellow arrow at the sign.
CDOT staff will be at the Bayfield Town Board meeting on Tuesday to discuss the light and possible ways to make the intersection safer.
"We're working together to try to make this light safer," said Mayor Matt Salka, who was at the intersection and witnessed the accident when it happened on March 17.
He said CDOT staff also will discuss the highway intersection with County Road 502 west of Bayfield, where several collisions take place every year.
The flashing yellow signal means that vehicles can turn left if the way is clear.
Jason Dupuis, who was travelling east on the highway at about 12:30 with his wife on his motorcycle, was killed in the collision. Dawn Dupuis is recovering at St. Anthony's Hospital in Denver.
Katherine Phelps of Bayfield was cited with one count of careless driving causing death, a misdemeanor. She was travelling west and turned left at the intersection.
Salka said he and Bayfield Town Manager Chris La May met with CDOT staff on March 20 to discuss the intersection.
He added that several drivers immediatedly went to help the couple and Phelps after the collision.
"Nobody hestitated" to help, he said. "It was very impressive." Marshal's deputies and Upper Pine personnel "showed up in minutes," he added. "Kudos to them." Dupuis, a Durango resident, was pronounced dead at the scene.
